Broadband Penetration Trends

Telcompaper lists the top 20 countries in terms of broadband penetration. An insightful one – count the number of european countries in the list. Also read this - At its current growth rate of over 90% per year, China will surpass the US in total broadband subscribers by late 2006 to become the largest broadband country in the world. No wonder that china is adding its own top level domain names, casting aside global standards.
China has a household penetration rate of 8.62% while the overall broadband penetration rate in Hong Kong is over 73%, South Korea is over 67%, and the US is 33.09%, as of Q3 2005.Emerging economies are seeing humongous growth rates in terms of bradband penetration : Thailand (214.89%), Pakistan (160%), and India (125.83%) had the highest growth rates among Asia-Pacific countries. Broadband is only a primary grade infrastructure - several things can be built over that - and this is what needs to be watched more closely. It is indeed quite noteworthy that across the globe several nations are quite ahead or of comparable stature in terms of broadband penetration as compared to the US.
